Taking
the stimulants started in Belgium 1882; first of all they used sugar and
alcohol. In cycling one of the first big drugs stories was that of Tommy
Simpson. He used drugs throughout his career in the 1950s and 1960s when there
were no really effective dope-testing procedures in place. Simpson’s career
tragically ended during the 13th stage of the 1967 Tour de France,
when he collapsed and died during the ascent of Mont Ventoux. His autopsy
revealed he’d been taking a mixture of amphetamines and stimulants which,
combined with extreme heat, exhaustion and stomach cramps proved lethal for Simpson.
In
1954 they had started to stand against the stimulants in Italy. Also they tried
to find ways to know if the athletes were using stimulants from 1961 onwards.
In
1964 they put a rule to punish any athlete who used drugs and he/she would be
dismissed from the Olympics. In the Winter Olympics in 1968, it was the first
time they followed this rule. In the Munich Olympics of1972, they found 2078 athletes
taking the stimulants but they dismissed only seven of them, because it was
very clear that they were dealing with dope. In the Montreal Olympics 1976,
they found 2001 but again they dismissed only seven for the same reason, but in
the Moscow Olympics they found 1667 athletes taking dope but they didn’t
dismiss any of them.
Lance Armstrong
said in his statement that it is impossible to win the in the bicycle race “Tour de France” without taking the stimulants. Lance Armstrong was
one of the famous bicycle riders; his height was1.77m and his weight 75kg. He
won Tour de
France seven times in a row between 1999 and 2005. He
had a cancer because of over taking the stimulants, but he was back in 2009 but
he couldn’t win; on 24 August 2012 the US Anti-Doping Agency took from him his
seven titles and he will be deprived of participation in racing forever.
Sir Christopher Andrew Hoy was British world and Olympic champion. He
is eleven times world champion and six times Olympic champion; he is a very healthy person; his height is 1.85 m and his weight 92 kg; from
his early life he was a bicycle rider. In the Olympic games in 2008, he became
the first British rider in 100 years to
take three golds in one games.
Miguel Indurain was a Spanish road
